UC DAVIS: ACCOUNTING & FINANCIAL SERVICES December 19, 2008 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Change to Credit Card Number Truncation Requirements Beginning January 1, 2009, all receipts involving credit card or debit card transactions that are printed at the time of the purchase, exchange, refund, or return are prohibited by California Civil Law from displaying anything other than the last 5 digits of the card number or the expiration date. If your department is a merchant that processes credit card and debit card transactions on a First Data terminal, please complete the following activities before December 31, 2008: 1) Gather the relevant information together; including merchant number, terminal id number and terminal serial number (this information is available on the sticker affixed to your terminal) 2) all First Data Terminal Support at 800-346-3315 a. Select option 1 for English language instruction b. If prompted, enter your merchant number followed by the ‘#” key c. Select option 2 for “credit card programming” d. Select option 1 for “terminal needs programming” e. Wait for technician and request programming download to truncate all receipts. f. Follow programming instructions of the technician 3) After successful programming download, please verify that only the last 5 digits of the card number displays on any receipt that prints out of the machine at the time of transaction. If you are a merchant that processes credit card or debit card transactions through a Point of Sale system, an internally hosted or an externally hosted web site, please ensure through your technical staff and/or vendor that all receipts that are printed or available to print at the time of the transaction truncate the card number to the last 5 digits.
