UC DAVIS: VICE CHANCELLOR - ADMINISTRATION

March 20, 2008

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

RE: "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day" (TODS) on April 24, 2008

Thursday, April 24 is national "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day"(TODS) when
employers nationwide host children at their workplaces. Intended for girls and boys
ages 8 to 12 years, the event introduces youth to the vast range of potential job
opportunities and questions about how their future work will fit into their overall
lives. In the case of colleges and universities, the day also introduces youth to
higher education and campus life.

The Ms. Foundation launched "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work" in April 2003 in
response to the competing challenges of work, family and community. The theme for
2008, "Making Choices for a Better World", complements the UC Davis vision of
earning, discovery, and engagement, as well as campus initiatives regarding
sustainability and diversity. TODS is a Principles of Community event.

Human Resources' WorkLife unit is again coordinating a day of campuswide events that
will encourage visiting youth to think critically about how their future work can
lead to a better world. TODS events are open to all UC Davis faculty, staff,
students, and their 8 - 12 year old guests. Release time is appropriate with advance
supervisory approval.

Colleges, divisions, and departments are encouraged to provide tours, exhibits,
demonstrations, job shadowing and other activities for youth visiting campus that
day. In addition, departments may wish to organize in-house programs for youth of
their own employees.
