UC DAVIS: ACADEMIC SENATE February 12, 2008 MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE; DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: 2008-2009 Call for Grants to Promote New Research Initiatives and Interdisciplinary Research ($10,000 up to $30,000) DEADLINE: Friday, April 11, 2008 The Committee on Research (COR) is now accepting applications from members of the Academic Senate for grants to promote (a) New Research Initiatives and (b) Interdisciplinary Research. The funding distribution for these two programs will depend on the number of outstanding applications received in each category. The level of funding requested can fall between $10,000 and $30,000 with appropriate budget justification, to be spent over a 15-month time period. (a) NEW RESEARCH INITIATIVES: Faculty, or teams of faculty, can apply for seed grants to provide support for new research initiatives. Grants should have the potential to lead to outside grant applications, or result in heightened visibility of UC Davis research programs. COR envisions that such proposals would allow for the initial development of highly innovative and original research projects or unique research facilities. Requests for extension of funding for existing research will be considered with appropriate justification (e.g., gap in funding), but will be of lower priority. The New Initiative proposals will be reviewed by the COR Grants committee based on their prospects for a successful program which includes, but is not limited to, highly innovative research, potential for significant extramural support, for bringing high visibility to campus, and for allowing new collaborative work by teams of faculty. (b) INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH GRANTS: The goal of these grants is to advance interdisciplinary research that allows faculty in groups of two or more from across the campus to work together on research ideas that bridge academic disciplines. Such groups can include faculty from the natural and biological sciences, biomedical sciences, arts and humanities, and the social sciences at UC Davis. One objective of this program is to develop research projects of mid- or long-term duration bridging the natural and human sciences in order to integrate the campus's strengths in these areas. Applicants should specify in their proposals plans for continuation of the research project or program, or sources extramural funding they intend to seek in the future to continue the work. Faculty are limited to serving as PI (Principle Investigator) on only one application, and biographical details must be included to cover all faculty involved in interdisciplinary or collaborative proposals. REVIEW: The Committee on Research reviews proposals when possible, but may appoint ad hoc reviewers if necessary to provide appropriate evaluations of applications. ELIGIBILITY for the Faculty Research Grant Program: All members of the Academic Senate are eligible for this grant. Faculty on leave without pay (LWOP) are not eligible and Emeriti will receive lower priority during the review of applications. Academic Federation members with research responsibilities in their title description can be included as members of joint applications. ALLOWABLE EXPENSES: All expenses in the furtherance of the applicant's research, except for faculty salaries, are allowable as long as they are justified in the proposal and meet university rules for eligibility. All books, films, equipment, etc. purchased with grant funds are the property of the University after they have served the grant holder's purpose. PROCEDURES: 1) Applications must be submitted electronically, via PDF e-mail attachment, to kapulliam@ucdavis.edu, by 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 11. Only one application of any grant can be submitted. If more than one application is submitted the first submitted version will be the one reviewed. 2) The web page http://academicsenate.ucdavis.edu/committee_cor.cfm sets out the form of the application and the details required. 3) Applicants will be notified electronically by May 30, 2008 whether they have been awarded funds. Please contact Kimberly Pulliam, Academic Senate Office with any questions, at (530)752-4918 or kapulliam@ucdavis.edu. Robert Berman Chair of the Committee on Research 08-017
