RE: Major Events: Housing Move-In and Aggie Stadium Information

This Saturday, September 22, two major campus events with the potential for
heavy roadway congestion will occur on campus. Beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Saturday, the UC Davis Housing Office will open the Segundo, Tercero, and
Cuarto housing areas for freshmen move-in and beginning later in the morning,
traffic around Aggie Stadium will increase in advance of the 1:30 p.m.
kickoff for the football game. For housing move-in, traffic throughout
campus is traditionally heavy with many families traveling to Davis for the
first time that need to drive to their assigned dormitory, run errands, and
drive around campus to become familiar with their new surroundings. Football
traffic was uneventful for the first game on Sept. 1, but the combined
traffic from these two upcoming events could result in traffic delays,
particularly on La Rue Road, Hutchison Drive, in the Health Sciences District
and near the Tercero housing area.

To minimize the overall disruption, the following preferred routes, road
closures and parking restrictions are planned.

---PREFFERED ROUTES---
With heavy congestion expected around the Tercero housing area, motorists are
advised to avoid the Tercero area and Old Davis Road if possible. Stadium
traffic from I-80 should use State Route 113, exit at Hutchison Drive and turn
right on Health Sciences Drive for Parking Lots 53 and 57 in the Health
Sciences District. Stadium traffic from downtown Davis is encouraged to use
Russell Boulevard to La Rue Road and to park in the West Entry Parking
Structure. If your operations will potentially be affected by the road
closures, please consult the following map to view the routing options and
road closures:
http://ucdavisaggies.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/gameday-parking.html.
If you will be attending the game, please follow these advised routes and
avoid the Tercero housing area.

---BICYCLE/PEDESTRIAN SAFETY---
If you will be walking or riding a bike this weekend, please remember that
many of the arriving families for freshmen move-in are unfamiliar with Davis
and may be distracted trying to find specific destinations. In addition,
many drivers are not used to seeing large volumes of bikes and pedestrians.
Anticipating that some vehicles may turn unexpectedly, may not yield properly,
or may not be looking for cyclists on the roadway can greatly increase your
safety. Please use extra caution, do not assume that a driver has seen you,
always wear a bike helmet, and check that your bike is in good operating
condition with appropriate reflectors and lights for night-time riding.

---ROAD CLOSURES---
To adjust for the combined effects of dormitory move-in traffic and football
traffic, the following road closures will be in effect beginning at 11:30 a.m.,
and continuing as late as 6:00 p.m.:

1) La Rue Road between Hutchison Drive and Garrod Drive.
2) In addition, for approximately one hour after the football game, Health
Sciences Drive northbound will be closed north of Parking Lot 53.

Accompanying these road closures will be detours with signs to direct both
stadium traffic and other campus users to alternate roadways. Most congestion
will occur from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and after the game
sometime between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

---PARKING RESTRICTIONS ---
To allow for dormitory move-in, parking lots and roads around the Tercero
housing area will be reserved for dormitory use only. No football parking
will be allowed in lots 44, 47, 47a, 48, 48a, Tercero Hall Circle, and
Bioletti Way. To maintain regular business operations in the Health
Sciences District, much of the parking in the Health Sciences District will
be reserved for non-stadium use only. Stadium parking WILL NOT BE allowed
in Parking Lots 50, 55, 51, the Thurman Lab parking area, and the two small
Medical Sciences parking lots. These lots will be reserved for regular
operations within the Health Sciences District, signed for no football parking,
and patrolled by TAPS to discourage football patrons from using these lots.
These lots will be reserved for employees needing access to buildings for
business purposes and similar users such as campus visitors needing access to
facilities such as the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Event and general use parking WILL BE allowed in Parking Lots 30, 40, 41, 53,
57, and the West Entry Parking Structure. In these lots, TAPS will charge
the daily parking fee of $6 for all vehicles not displaying a valid UC Davis
parking permit. These lots are expected to be full by noon. Parking Lot 56
has been reserved for the football game and will not be available for general
use. In other campus parking lots, no stadium restrictions will be in place
and parking will be available for no charge as it is on typical weekends.

---LOOK TO HELP---
It is likely that many people will need directions or advice this weekend.
Please welcome new campus visitors with a smile, and a hello, and make
yourself available for giving directions and providing your expertise about
the wonderful attributes of UC Davis and the overall Davis experience.
Please be patient with people who are stopped and need advice and be patient
with the police officers, Aggie Hosts, and TAPS staff working to improve
traffic flow and campus safety. With a positive welcome and a few moments
to receive clear directions, new members to campus will quickly realize that
Davis is a great community.
