UC DAVIS: Offices of the Chancellor and Provost Office of Campus Community Relations June 12, 2007 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: CAMPUS COMMUNITY BOOK PROJECT NOMINATIONS FOR 2008-09 The Campus Council on Community and Diversity invites all members of the Davis community to nominate books for the Campus Community Book Project of 2008-09. For UC Davis' centennial year, we request books that would foster reflection on the mission of UC Davis as a Land Grant university: the multi-disciplinary education that prepares students for a lifetime of service and that informs teaching and research efforts that address significant community and global problems, such as climate change, sustainability, inequalities in education, or rising costs of health care. We welcome nominations of books that are compelling and thought provoking to engage us in dialogue about complex contemporary questions; well-written and accessible to a general audience; short enough to be integrated into courses; and provocative and intriguing to as many members of the community as possible, to invite diverse participation and integration into discussion groups and courses across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Any published work that is still in print in paperback (e.g., non-fiction, plays, novels, collections of short stories, essays) is eligible. In addition, the book's author must be available to visit campus and speak at the Mondavi Center for the Arts. To nominate a book, please send the book title and author, plus a short explanation of why this book would make a worthy selection, to Gary Sue Goodman (gsgoodman@ucdavis.edu) by June 15. If you are interested in helping to review nominations and select the book for 2008-09, please contact Gay Sue Goodman. The selection committee will start meeting in late June, read intensively over the summer, and resume meeting in mid-August to achieve consensus on its recommendations by October. The Campus Community Book Project is sponsored by the Office of Campus Community Relations, the Campus Council on Community and Diversity, and the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost. Virginia S.
