UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR May 3, 2007 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS PLEASE MAKE THIS AVAILABLE TO ALL FACULTY AND STAFF RE: Appointment of Barbara Horwitz as Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor I am pleased to announce that Barbara Horwitz, Vice Provost-Academic Personnel, has accepted the position of Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, effective July 1, 2007. She will very capably step in as the campus seeks a permanent successor to Virginia Hinshaw, who has been appointed Chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. As Executive Vice Chancellor, Dr. Horwitz will share with me the overall coordination of campus administration with emphasis on day-to-day operations, supervision of budget preparation, allocation of funds, policy development, health sciences administration, and physical planning. As Provost, she will serve as the chief academic officer for the campus and will be responsible for academic planning, academic and administrative computing, academic programs, academic personnel administration, diversity, libraries, outreach programs, international programs, Summer Sessions, University Extension, and several academic support programs, and for liaison with the Academic Senate and Academic Federation. The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor also serves as the UC Davis affirmative action officer. Dr. Horwitz has served as Vice Provost-Academic Personnel since July 2001 and concurrently holds a faculty position as Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior in the College of Biological Sciences and as Professor of Human Physiology in the School of Medicine. She joined the faculty at UC Davis in 1972 and has served in numerous leadership roles, including serving as Chair of the Section of Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from 1993-1998. Dr. Horwitz is a seasoned academic leader, recognized both nationally and on the campus for her record of significant achievement as a faculty member and administrator. I am confident that she will ably fill the position of Interim Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor while a national search proceeds. Please join me in welcoming her to her new role.
