UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR December 19, 2006 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Appointment of Janet Gong as Interim Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs I am pleased to announce that Regents have approved the appointment of Janet Gong, Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs, as Interim Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs effective January 1, 2007. She succeeds Vice Chancellor Judy Sakaki who will be joining the Office of the President as Vice President for Student Affairs on January 1. As Interim Vice Chancellor, Dr. Gong will be responsible for initiating, developing, and maintaining programs, services and facilities that support students in their academic pursuits, provide stewardship of student life and the campus climate, and promote opportunities for students to develop leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility. The Division of Student Affairs oversees a number of departments which provide enrollment management and academic support services, student housing, physical and mental health and wellness programs, intercollegiate athletics, student life and campus community; campus unions, campus recreation, and campus bookstores. Dr. Gong joined UC Davis in 1997 as Assistant Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs and was promoted to Associate Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs in 2004. Prior to her arrival at Davis, she served in positions of increasing responsibility in Student Affairs at UCLA from 1972-1997. I am confident that she will provide very effective leadership for Student Affairs while serving as Interim Vice Chancellor. A national search to fill the position of Vice Chancellor-Student Affairs will begin at the start of the winter quarter. Larry N. Vanderhoef Chancellor 06-133
