UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR - ADMINISTRATION

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

RE: Fire and Life Safety Inspections

All University of California, Davis leased, owned or occupied property must
comply with State Building and Fire Codes and the State Fire Marshal's Office
has placed the authority for ensuring compliance with the Fire Department on
our campus.  Under this authority, the UC Davis Fire Department identifies
and orders corrections of conditions that might cause or contribute to a fire
or to other hazardous incidents.

Our facilities managers and campus department personnel share a common interest
with the Fire Department in the operation of facilities that are safe
environments in which to achieve our academic mission.  Ideally, all UC Davis
departments cooperate to develop regular maintenance and inspection schedules
for structures, fire protection systems and equipment; develop safety plans;
and comply with building and fire codes.

Fire and Life Safety Inspections are an effective tool to assist us in
maintaining a safe workplace and minimizing potential hazards to employees,
students and visitors.  These inspections, whether planned or impromptu, are
fully supported by the Office of Administration. Department Safety Coordinators
are notified of the time and date of these inspections and are invited to
accompany Fire Department staff.  During these inspections the UC Davis Fire
Department identifies and issues written notices of hazards or code violations
to the person directly responsible for operations of the applicable portion of
a facility.  Deadlines issued for correction will depend upon the nature of the
violation.  For serious violations, the correction period will be very short.

One of the basic tenets of the Fire Code is to provide safe exiting for the
building occupants.  Maintaining exit paths free of storage not only provides
building occupants with the ability to safely and quickly exit should a fire or
other emergency occur, but it also enables firefighters the ability to safely
access the room/area of concern in order to quickly mitigate the emergency.
Please remember that exit paths exist for use by all occupants of the building
and must be kept free of storage unless specifically permitted by the Fire
Department.

Thank you very much for your cooperation as we work together to maintain a safe
workplace for our employees, students and visitors.

Stan Nosek
Vice Chancellor - Administration
