RE: RFA for Junior Faculty Cancer Research Projects
Submission Deadline: Monday, October 2, 2006
The Cancer Center, through an award from the American Cancer Society called the
Institutional Research Grant [IRG], provides up to $30,000/project in seed money
for cancer research projects from junior faculty (assistant level or equivalent
in research series and within seven years of initial academic appointment), an
increase over previous award limits. Allocations are made by the IRG Committee
after a competitive review of each application. The Associate Dean for Research,
School of Medicine, has provided additional funds for this program. In the
forthcoming Eleventh Cycle, we will make four awards.
The purpose of the IRG award is to support initiation of promising new projects
or novel investigations. It is hoped that project results can be used as the
basis of competitive applications for national funding from the National Cancer
Institute, the Society, or similar peer-reviewed extramural sponsors. A number
of IRG awardees have been able to do just that. Investigators who currently have
a competitive national research grant (including First Awards from NIH) are not
eligible to apply. For the first time, previous IRG recipients can apply for a
second award. Previous, unsuccessful applicants to the IRG are encouraged to
revise their applications and reapply.
The proposal narrative cannot exceed five pages. Review of proposals takes four
to six weeks. Awards will be announced no later than December 1, 2006 and funded
projects will start no later than January 2, 2007. Proposals in all areas of
cancer research -- basic, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, etc. - are welcome.
Deadline for submission of applications is Monday, October 2, 2006.
Application forms and instructions can be obtained from Christina Sawyers, Cancer
Center Administration. Requests to Ms. Sawyers may be by telephone
(916.734.5807) or by email christina.sawyers@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu. The application
is in MS Word (Office 2003). Please put "IRG Application File" in the subject line.
Questions about the program may be directed to me (916.734.3771) or
