UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR - ADMINISTRATION July 25, 2006 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Campus Energy Supply This communication is intended to provide an update and answer questions we have received regarding the campus energy supply, possible outages, and our air-conditioning capacity in light of the extended period of unusually high temperatures. The excessive temperatures and demand for air conditioning have stressed the capacity of our Central Cooling Systems and individual building A/C systems. Our primary objective is to maintain appropriate environments for research and animal care, and keep general indoor temperatures as comfortable as possible. The Facilities: Operations & Maintenance team has been working 24/7 to maintain critical facilities. While we are very aware that the temperatures in some buildings are higher than normal, we do not expect the situation to become critical for any of our employees. We ask for your continued understanding until the weather conditions improve. We also ask for your cooperation in reporting true maintenance emergencies only so that the O&M staff can focus their efforts on critical issues related to climate control. The UC Davis campus is exempt from rolling blackouts that the California Independent Service Operator (ISO) can implement when power demand exceeds supply. However, we will continue to ask individuals to help find ways to reduce our campus energy consumption. Every light, printer, etc. that you are able to turn off helps to reduce both consumption and cost. Our collective commitment to eliminate wasteful energy use will benefit our environment as well as mitigate the major impact that energy consumption has on our overall campus budget. In addition, our efforts help to reduce the chance of rolling blackouts for others around the state. The campus community is encouraged to assist by conserving as much energy as possible, not only on campus, but off campus as well. The California ISO advises customers to set their thermostats at 82 degrees or higher as health conditions permit, cool areas with fans, draw the draperies, turn off unnecessary lights and appliances and use large appliances in the early morning or late at night. For general information, the California Independent System Operations (ISO) provides online updates at http://www.caiso.com. Thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to get through the challenges associated with this unusual stretch of very hot days. Stan Nosek Vice Chancellor - Administration 06-077
