UC DAVIS: Office of the Chancellor Office of the Provost June 5, 2006 UC Davis Faculty RE: Invitation to Attend Summer SITT We're writing to invite you to the 11th annual UC Davis Summer Institute on Teaching and Technology (SITT). The Institute has been expanded this year to include a much wider range of issues than in the recent past to include student writing, group learning, use of media, use of technology, and research on teaching and learning. The SITT provides campus instructors with a first-rate opportunity to explore new ideas and teaching strategies with a cadre of expert presenters and coaches. It's open to all UC Davis faculty (both Senate and Lecturers), and it's a great place to work with colleagues on new approaches to course design, classroom instruction, student mentoring, and other teaching issues. SITT 2006 is scheduled for July 24th through the 28th and will provide a rich mix of hands-on workshops, panel discussions, and demonstrations. One strand will focus on using teaching tools available through "Sakai," the campus's new instructional technology system. Other strands focus on issues of student writing, media-rich teaching and learning, group work in the classroom, and research on teaching and learning. SITT participants can focus on a single strand or combine sessions from different strands into their own individualized program. Keep in mind that the SITT welcomes both individuals and groups. If your department or program is redesigning a set of courses, then we encourage you to bring a faculty team to the SITT and do it there—with technical support close at hand. The SITT can also help you create new teaching groups that don't presently exist. At SITT you'll find colleagues that are eager to explore new ideas in teaching and learning. A more detailed list of SITT topics and features is attached. For more information and application forms, contact the Teaching Resource Center at trc@ucdavis.edu (Phone: 752-6050) or visit the SITT web site: http://trc.ucdavis.edu/TRC/sitt/index.html This year's SITT promises to be a very fruitful interchange among some of the most interesting and engaging teachers on campus. We hope that you will join us. Thank you. Jon Wagner Director of the Teaching Resources Center Fred Wood Interim Vice Provost - Undergraduate Studies 06-065
