RE: Junior Faculty Cancer Research Grants
The Cancer Center, through an award from the American Cancer
Society called the Institutional Research Grant [IRG], provides
up to $20,000/project in seed money for cancer research
projects from junior faculty (assistant level or equivalent in
research series and within seven years of initial academic
appointment). Allocations are made by the IRG Committee after a
competitive review of each application. The Dean, School of
Medicine, has matched the society grant with $20,000 per year
for an additional award. We will make four or five awards in
the forthcoming tenth cycle.
The purpose of the IRG award is to support initiation of
promising new projects or novel investigations. It is hoped
that project results can be used as the basis of competitive
applications for national funding from the National Cancer
Institute, the society, or similar peer-reviewed extramural
sponsors. A number of IRG awardees have been able to do just
that. Investigators who currently have a competitive national
research grant (including First Awards from NIH) or who have
received prior support from the Institutional Research Grant
Program are not eligible to apply. Previous, unsuccessful
applicants to the IRG are encouraged to revise their
applications and reapply.
The proposal narrative cannot exceed five pages. Review of
proposals takes four to six weeks. Awards will be announced no
later than November 1, 2005 and funded projects will start no
later than December 1, 2005. Proposals in all areas of cancer
research, basic, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, etc.,
are welcome. Deadline for submission of applications for the
tenth cycle is Thursday, September 15, 2005.
Application forms and instructions can be obtained from Joel
Kugelmass, Cancer Center Administration. Requests to Mr.
Kugelmass may be by telephone (916.734.5818), email

The application in electronic format can be obtained by
sending email to Mr. Kugelmass with “IRG Application File”
in the subject line.
