RE: Campus Community Book Project 2006
The Campus Council on Community and Diversity invites all members
of the Davis community to nominate books for the 2006 annual Campus
Community Book Project related to the theme Healthy Food. With
this as the overarching umbrella, we request book recommendations
around the related topics of:
obesity, nutrition, genetically modified organisms, the culture of
foods, disparities in availability of healthy food and health care,
the connection between food and cancer prevention, etc.
Like previous years, the Campus Community Book Project aims to
oster dialogue among students, faculty, staff, and residents of the
surrounding area about important social issues that affect our lives.
We also want to promote learning about varied perspectives and ideas
around the chosen topic.
We welcome nominations of books that will achieve these goals by
being compelling and thought provoking to engage us in dialogue about
contemporary questions that have many possible answers; well written
and accessible to a general audience; short enough to be read within
the time frame usually allotted for coursework; provocative and
intriguing to as many members of the community as possible, to invite
diverse participation and integration into discussion groups and
courses across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. An
additional consideration for a recommended title is the possibility
that the book's author would be available to speak as part of the
Mondavi Center's Distinguished Lecture Series.
Any published work that is still in print in paperback (e.g. non-
fiction, plays, novels, collections of short stories or essays) is
eligible. To make a nomination, please send a message to Karen Roth
in the Office of Campus Community Relations (kmroth@ucdavis.edu).
Please include the book title and author, plus a short explanation of
why this book would make a worthy selection. We will begin reviewing
nominations in July so your early recommendation by June 30, 2005 will
help us to move through the process.
As nominations are made, we will post them on the book project web site
at http://occr.ucdavis.edu/bookproject.html.
If you are interested in helping to review nominations and select the
book for 2006, please contact Karen Roth. Reading team members will
meet monthly throughout the summer with more regular meetings
beginning in the fall as we proceed to final selection. Reading team
members will be asked to read and review books as needed throughout
the selection process.
The Campus Community Book Project is sponsored by the Office of
Campus Community Relations, the Campus Council on Community and
Diversity, and the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost.
