UC DAVIS: TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING SERVICES DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS, DAVIS CAMPUS ONLY May 25, 2005 RE: 2005-06 Parking Permit Rates This annual parking update provides information on parking facilities currently under construction and planned for construction next fiscal year, the rate increases necessary to support parking facility development, and the alternatives available to save you money on your parking permit. The West Entry Parking Structure (WEPS), a 1500 space, six level facility and the new Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) offices are currently under construction at the corner of Hutchison Drive and Kleiber Hall Drive and are scheduled to be completed this December. Additionally, Parking Services will construct two new surface parking lots (Lot 56 expansion and Lot 57) in the Health Sciences area this next year to accommodate the significant growth in this district. The 2005/06 Parking Permit rate increases (a $1/month increase for each permit type except the Visitor Permit) (attached) have been approved by the campus to go into effect on July 1, 2005. These new rates reflect the third of four planned increases necessary to meet the debt service obligations of the West Entry Parking Facility Development Project (WEPS, TAPS Office, and Hutchison Drive roadway improvements) and Parking Services' increased annual operating costs. Did you know that by purchasing an "L" permit ($21/month) versus an "A" permit ($47/month) or a "C" permit ($38/month), you can save $312 and $204 a year respectively? "L" parking spaces have been identified in various areas located on the perimeter of campus, and include the following: Lot 2 south of the South Entry Parking Structure; Lot 30 west of the Rec Pool; Lot 35 east of the Human Resources Building; the Putah Creek Lodge (PCL) parking lot; and a section of West Health Science Drive. Although "L" spaces are not available in all areas of the campus and are less conveniently located outside the core of campus, they are still within a reasonable walk to many campus locations. "L" parking in Lot 2, for instance, is a nine-minute walk to Mrak Hall versus a four-minute walk from the South Entry Parking Structure. Many who park in remote lots consider the added time for walking a pleasant part of their day and enjoy the monthly savings. Additionally, bicycle parking is available within the "L" designated parking lots and adjacent to the "L" designated roadways to facilitate parking your vehicle on campus and using your bicycle to commute to your ultimate campus destination(s). Another option to consider is our carpool parking program. If you do not know other employees who would like to carpool with you, we can help out by matching you with other interested commuters in your area. The carpool program provides one permit to share and allows each annual carpool participant 24 daily use permits per year that can be used when you need to drive separately from the carpool. Carpoolers not only save on permit and fuel costs, but also avoid wear and tear on their personal vehicles while helping to reduce automobile congestion and emissions. "A" permit carpoolers save $30-$36/month over an individual "A" permit, and "C" permit carpoolers save $25-$29/month over an individual "C" permit. Parking permit customers will continue to have access to the Motorist Assistance Program, which provides at no additional costs: lights-on notification; transportation to a gas station if patrons run out of gas; lock-out assistance (vehicle entry); and battery jump service. Last year Parking Services responded to nearly 2,000 requests for motorist assistance. In addition, valid UC Davis parking permits are honored in all campus lots after 5:00 PM and at evening (after 5:00 PM) and weekend events when the Special Event Attendant Parking Program is in operation. Please give the customer service staff at TAPS a call (752-8277) or email us at taps@ucdavis.edu to discuss options available to save you money on your parking permit. Together with the help of our Transportation and Parking Advisory Committee, the Transportation and Parking Work Group, and your individual suggestions and feedback, Parking Services will continue its efforts to seek ways to further reduce projected rate increases for the future. We take very seriously our responsibility to support the parking needs of our campus students, staff, faculty and visitors. We seek to be excellent stewards of the resources and revenues entrusted to us and welcome your suggestions to improve our services. Sincerely, Clifford A. Contreras Director, Transportation and Parking Services 05-065
