RE: October Is National Work And Family Month

The National Work-Life Initiative, launched in 2003 by a congressional resolution
declaring October as National Work and Family Month, provides education and
heightens awareness of work-life effectiveness:
http://www.awlp.org/nwli/homepage.jsp#workfamily.
UC Davis supports the resolution and initiative to create healthy work environments
that integrate institutional, personal and community outcomes:

The Congressional Resolution identifies 11 important issues confronting American
workers that are addressed by the adoption of work-life programs and services,
including:
* 85 percent of U.S. wage and salaried workers have immediate, day-to-day family
responsibilities off the job;
* 46 percent of wage and salaried workers are parents with children under the age
of 18 who live with them at least half-time;
* nearly one out of every four Americans -- over 45 million Americans -- provided
or arranged care for a family member or friend in the past year;
* an increasing number of baby boomers reach retirement age in record numbers and
more and more Americans are faced with the challenge of caring for older parents.

According to the National Work-Life Initiative:

* Work-Life is the ability to effectively manage work, family, and personal life.
* Work-Life contributes to the well being and productivity of the American workers
and their workplaces.
* Work-Life improves job satisfaction, commitment to employers, and retention.
* Work-Life helps nurture happier, harder-working employees by alleviating on-the-job
stress.
*  Work-Life increases on-the-job performance.
* Work-Life lessens employee utilization of the health care system.
* Work-Life helps improve self-esteem and lessens feelings of anger or resentment.
* Work-Life helps build stronger families.
* Work-Life helps employees manage work and family responsibilities.
* Work-Life allows parents to be more involved in their children's lives.

The Congressional Resolution further states that work-life programs:

* are key predictors of job productivity, job satisfaction, commitment to employers,
and retention;
* allow parents to be more involved in their children's lives, and parental involvement
is associated with children's higher achievement in language and mathematics, improved
behavior, greater academic persistence, and lower dropout rates.
