UC DAVIS: Offices of the Chancellor and Provost - Campus Community Relations June 11, 2004 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: CAMPUS COMMUNITY BOOK PROJECT - 2005 The Campus Council on Community and Diversity invites all members of the Davis community to nominate books for the 2005 annual Campus Community Book Project. This year’s selection, Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 will be highlighted this fall. However, due to the length of time needed to plan for the book project programs, the 2005 book selection has to begin this summer. Like previous years, the Campus Community Book Project aims to foster dialogue among students, faculty, staff, and residents of the surrounding area about important social issues that affect our lives. We also want to promote learning about varied perspectives and ideas that may be new to us. We welcome nominations of books that will achieve these goals by being: • compelling and thought provoking • well written and accessible to a general audience • short enough to be read within the time frame usually allotted for coursework • provocative and intriguing to as many members of the community as possible, to invite diverse participation and integration into discussion groups and courses across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Any published work that is still in print in paperback (e.g., non-fiction, plays, novels, collections of short stories or essays) is eligible. To make a nomination, please send a message to Karen Roth in the Office of Campus Community Relations (kmroth@ucdavis.edu). Please include the book title and author, plus a short explanation of why this book would make a worthy selection. We will begin reviewing nominations in July so your early recommendation will help us to move through the process. As nominations are made, we will post them on the book project web site at: http://occr.ucdavis.edu/bookproject.html If you are interested in helping to review nominations and select the book for 2005, please contact Karen Roth. Reading team members will meet monthly throughout the summer with more regular meetings beginning in the fall as we proceed to final selection. Reading team members will be asked to read and review books as needed throughout the selection process. The Campus Community Book Project is sponsored by the Office of Campus Community Relations, the Campus Council on Community and Diversity, and the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost. Virginia S.
