UC DAVIS: Office of Resource Management and Planning April 29, 2004 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Thurman Laboratory Improvements Draft Tiered Initial Study and Proposed Negative Declaration UC Davis proposes two improvements for the Thurman Laboratory building located on the UC Davis campus. The first improvement would renovate existing laboratory space and laboratory support space to accommodate additional work of the California Animal Health and Food Safety System (CAHFS). The renovated space would be used for processing biological samples received by CAHFS in support of regional animal and food safety screenings. The project would renovate existing of Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) areas in Thurman Laboratory to create a 763-assignable square foot (asf) BSL-3 microbiology laboratory and specimen handling area with support areas. The second improvement consists of placing a temporary building of approximately 2,400 square feet on an existing asphalt area south of the Thurman Laboratory. The temporary building would be used for high volume testing of tissue samples from dairy cattle. The building would include office space, laboratory space, biocontainment sp! ace, and storage space. Approximately 2,000 square feet of the building would be designed to exceed BSL-2 protocols for containment and employee safety. The proposed project is a component of growth consistent with the 2003 Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) and would support the 2003 LRDP objectives by enhancing the role of CAHFS in providing an important public service to the agricultural community. UC Davis is noted for its wealth of interdisciplinary research, and the ease with which students, faculty and researchers from varied disciplines cross academic boundaries to collaborate. The 2003 LRDP indicates that the campus environment should foster this accessibility and promote interaction among members of the campus community and among affiliated public and private sector research partners. The proposed renovation would further assist CAHFS, a public research partner with UC Davis, in protecting animal and food health safety. I am writing to inform you that a Draft Tiered Initial Study has been prepared that analyzes the potential environmental effects of the proposed project. You are invited to comment on the Draft Tiered Initial Study and proposed Negative Declaration through May 28, 2004. Copies of the Draft Tiered Initial Study and proposed Negative Declaration are available during normal operating hours at the UC Davis Office of Resource Management and Planning in 376 Mrak Hall on campus; at Reserves in the UC Davis Shields Library; at the Yolo County Public Library, 315 E. 14th Street, Davis; at the Vacaville Public Library, 1020 Ulatis Drive, Vacaville; and online at http://www.ormp.ucdavis.edu/environreview/.
