UC DAVIS: CAMPUS COMMUNITY RELATIONS April 8, 2004 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: A Principles of Community Celebration: Soaring to New Heights, April 27, 2004 and Disability Pride Week, April 26-30, 2004 Don’t miss this year’s Soaring to New Heights and Disability Pride Week as the two programs partner again to offer two exciting diversity programs! The Soaring to New Heights 12th Annual program, to be held on Tuesday, April 27, from 1:30-11:30 in Freeborn Hall, is a celebration of diversity including multicultural entertainment and an international buffet. The program also features table displays by UC Campus Constituent groups and the announcement of the Annual Diversity & Principles of Community Achievement Recognition Awards and the Disability Pride Awards. For further information about the upcoming Soaring to New Heights program, contact Chair Tammy McNiff at (530) 752-2071 or tdmcniff@ucdavis.edu. To purchase tickets for the Soaring to New Heights international buffet, see website http://www.hr.ucdavis.edu/soar2004. Tickets must be purchased by April 16, and no tickets will be sold at the door. During the week of April 26-30, 2004, we celebrate our 18th Annual Disability Pride Week, with a program of events that deal with topics related to disabilities. As the campus’s Principles of Community state, “We take pride in our various achievements, and we celebrate our differences.” We encourage all members of our community to engage in active learning about the lives and experiences of those who have a variety of physical, mental or learning disabilities. The schedule of programs include: a discussion of “Do You Know What Mental Illness Is?” by Donna Bousquet of the Yolo chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill; an “Understanding Disabilities” class offered by Staff Development; a presentation by Robert Segalman, PhD, about “Speech to Speech,” a service for people with speech disabilities who have difficulty being understood on the phone; “Hello/Goodby Ada Who?” a presentation by long-time disability rights advocate, HolLynn D’Lil; and a discussion of disability in the movies that will include a full screening of the 2004 Academy Award-winning film, “Finding Nemo.” Details about the programs are available at http://www.hr.ucdavis.edu/. The program will also include drawings for great prizes, including a Disneyland Getaway Package, Las Vegas show tickets and more. For further information, contact Disability Pride Week Chairs Irene M. Day at 752-6287, imday@ucdavis.edu or Keltie Jones at 752-1384, ,kejones@ucdavis.edu. All events are free, and brown bag lunches are welcome. All facilities are wheelchair accessible. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Keltie Jones at 752-3184 or kejones@ucdavis.edu. Supervisors should urge all staff to participate in the Soaring to New Heights event and all Disability Pride Week activities. Department/Unit representation at these events is highly recommended. Release time with supervisory approval is appropriate. I hope you will join us in this exciting Principles of Community Celebration, sponsored by the Office of Campus Community Relations.
