UC DAVIS: ACADEMIC SENATE -- COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH

Wednesday, October 22, 2003

To: Deans, Directors and Department Chairs

From: Steven Velinsky, Chair, Committee on Research

Subject: Extension of Deadline for the 2003-2004 New Faculty Research
Grant Program

DEADLINE REVISED: 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2003

Call site: http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/senate/committee_cor.htm

The Committee on Research is accepting applications from all eligible
members of the Academic Senate who are now on campus. All new faculty in a
ladder rank or equivalent position whose appointments began on or after
April 17, 2003, and who did not apply for the 2003-2004 Faculty Research
Grant Program are eligible to apply for this program. Funding is for a
maximum of $4000.

The Committee on Research relies on the department chairs and the
department MSOs/PSAs to circulate this information to the new faculty in
their unit.

Please note applications must be submitted electronically via e-mail
attachment. The entire application is to be submitted as a single
attachment and must not be submitted as a part of the e-mail text. PAPER
APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Applications must be e-mailed using the following address, frg@ucdavis.edu,
by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2003.

The funding period is for the 2003-2004 Academic Year ending June 30,
2004. All funds must be expended no later than June 30, 2004.

New Faculty Research Grant proposals will be evaluated on the basis of the
significance of the project and need. In the case of faculty who are new
to UC Davis, but who are not assistant professors, research and publication
records will be part of the evaluation.

As stated in the Sponsored Research Manual, Section 505 “Proposals should
be specific, well-defined, and concerned with developing fundamental
principles rather than with routine application of established principles
or routine collection of data.”

In case of limited funds, new assistant professors who are in the first
year of their career appointment at a university will be given preference.

PLEASE NOTE:

* Please follow with care the Application Guidelines.
* Applications with a total budget in excess of the maximum amount of $4000
will not be reviewed.
* Only applications submitted as e-mail attachments with all material as a
single attachment will be accepted.
* Check the description of allowable and non-allowable expenses in the
Sponsored Research Manual, Section 505 before preparing your budget.
Non-allowable items cannot and will not be approved.
* This call is for research support for the fiscal year 2003-2004. All
funds must be expended no later than June 30, 2004. If the research
project is expected to extend over more than one year, it should be clearly
indicated in the research description what part the PI proposes to complete
this year and how this fits into the long-term project.
* Faculty on leave without salary are not eligible for a New Faculty
Research Grant unless approved as an exception by the Committee on Research
and the Vice Chancellor Research. A letter of request for exception must
be included in the application.
