UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR September 8, 2003 TO: ALL MEMBERS OF THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY RE: September 11 Anniversary Events On Thursday, September 11, 2003, we will mark the second anniversary of the tragedies of twenty-four months ago in New York, Virginia, and Western Pennsylvania. Although two years now separate us from these events, their impact continues to affect our nation and personal lives in many ways. Individually, each of us may reflect upon these events in our own personal way; however, I invite you to join me and other members of our campus community at the Memorial Union Flagpole to observe a collective moment of silence for those who were lost and the heroic actions of many. There will be brief remarks followed by the ringing of chimes atop Memorial Union at noon. An honor guard of campus firefighters and police will lower the flag and we will observe a moment of silence. The chimes will then sound "America the Beautiful." A brief program will also be held at the UC Davis Medical Center at noon in the courtyard of the Patient Services Support Building. We understand that anniversaries are often powerful reminders of the original events and can evoke the same powerful emotions. The following UC Davis resources are available to provide assistance to faculty, staff, and students who wish to seek it: Student Counseling Center in North Hall, 752-0871, and the Academic and Staff Assistance Program, 112 A Street, 752-2727 (campus), and 2730 Stockton Boulevard, Suite 3117, 916-734-2727 (UCDMC). Release time is appropriate with supervisory approval. Larry N. Vanderhoef Chancellor 03-099
