UC DAVIS: HUMANITIES INSTITUTE

12/4/02

TO: MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE

RE: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2003-2004 FELLOWSHIPS

Applications are now open for the 2003-2004 Fellowships at the Davis
Humanities Institute. Established in 1987, the Institute provides
residential Fellowships for Davis faculty members engaged in research
projects that have a humanistic focus. Six one-quarter Fellowships
for individual research will be available during 2003-2004 to Davis
faculty members.

The 2003-2004 theme will be "Tolerance and Intolerance." We are
seeking a wide range of scholars with interest in all aspects of
this topic, and the Institute is particularly interested in scholars
willing and able to broaden the historical, geographical and cultural
parameters of the discussion.

All fellows are required to participate in a ongoing seminar and to
present their work in progress as it relates to the theme. Funds
will be available to invite visiting speakers. Campus Fellows will
be relieved of teaching responsibilities during one quarter of their
residence. Fellows should, however, expect to participate in the
seminar throughout the entire academic year. The University will
continue to pay full salary and benefits during the residence period.
Any member of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate is eligible
to apply. The Institute will normally award a Fellowship to a Senate
member no more than once in any five-year period.

The application deadline is January 24, 2003. Applications will be
reviewed by the Humanities Institute Advisory Board, and the Director
will announce the awards on or around January 31, 2003. Please send:
1) a brief curriculum vitae; 2) a short description of your project
(about 1000 words); 3) a statement of the academic quarter of
residence desired; and 4) a statement of endorsement from your
Department or Program Chairperson. All proposals must reach the
Humanities Institute by 5:00 p.m. of the deadline date.

N.B.: The tentative theme for 2004-2005 will be "Exile and Return"
