UC DAVIS: Cancer Center October 22, 2002 TO: MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE AND THE ACADEMIC FEDERATION RE: Grant Program for Junior Faculty Cancer Research Projects The Cancer Center has been awarded an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant [IRG] to provide up to $20,000 for beginning cancer research projects from junior faculty. Allocations are made intramurally by the IRG Committee after a competitive review of each application. The Dean, School of Medicine, has contributed additional support. In the coming competitive cycle, funding is available for at least five awards. Applications are welcome from faculty in any school or college. The purpose of the IRG award is to serve as "seed" money for initiation of promising new projects or novel investigations from junior faculty (assistant-level professors or researchers including adjunct appointments at UCD). Investigators who currently have a competitive national research grant or who have received prior support from the Institutional Research Grant Program are not eligible to apply. Previous, unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to revise their applications and reapply. Quite a few IRG awardees have used results from their projects to compete successfully for national funding. If you mentor young investigators in cancer-related areas, your encouragement of an IRG application would be most appropriate. If you are a potential applicant, consider submitting the short application (five-page narrative). Deadline for submission of applications for the eighth cycle is 4:00 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2002. Awards will be announced in late February 2003 and funded projects will start March 1, 2003. Projects in any area of cancer research -- basic, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, etc. -- will be considered. Application forms and instructions can be downloaded at: http://cancer.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/research/institutional_research_grant_progra m.html or obtained from Ellen Picht, Cancer Center Administration. Requests to Ms. Picht may be by telephone (916-734-5807), by e-mail ellen.picht@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu or by facsimile (916-451-4464). Questions about the program may be directed to me (e-mail below) or to Joel Kugelmass, Cancer Center analyst (916-734-5818) or joel.kugelmass@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu. Yours truly, David R. Gandara, M.D. david.gandara@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu Associate Director for Clinical Research Principal Investigator, IRG Program UC Davis Cancer Center 02-145
