UC DAVIS: Office of the Chancellor September 23, 2002 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS SUBJECT: Western Association of Schools and Colleges Reaccreditation The campus is preparing for its Institutional Review Process by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) scheduled to take place in 2002-2003. In January 2000 the WASC Steering Committee was convened to begin the reaccreditation process. In order to remain accredited, UC Davis is required to demonstrate it fulfills the expectations of the two Core Commitments of the Accrediting Commission: (1) commitment to institutional capacity and (2) commitment to educational effectiveness. 1) Commitment to Institutional Capacity On September 4, 2002, the campus submitted the on-line Preparatory Review Report. The Preparatory Review is designed to enable the WASC Commission to determine whether an institution fulfills the Core Commitment to Institutional Capacity: The institution functions with clear purposes, high levels of institutional integrity, fiscal stability, and organizational structures and processes to fulfill its purposes. The URL is: http://wasc.ucdavis.edu. I urge you to review the portfolio and comment through e-mail to wasc@ucdavis.edu. The Preparatory Review team will visit the campus December 4-6, 2002, in order to verify the evidence included in the Preparatory Review Report using the methodology of academic audit. They will be interviewing campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students. Your familiarity with the UC Davis WASC Institutional Portfolio, our Educational Objectives, and their relationship to your units will be a positive contribution to our reaccreditation process. 2) Commitment to Educational Effectiveness On December 12, 2002, the campus will submit the Educational Effectiveness Review Report. The Educational Effectiveness Review is designed to enable the WASC Commission to determine whether an institution fulfills the Core Commitment to Educational Effectiveness: The institution evidences clear and appropriate educational objectives and design at the institutional and program levels, and employs processes of review, including the collection and use of data, that assure the delivery of programs and learner accomplishments at a level of performance appropriate for the degree or certificate awarded. The Educational Effectiveness team will visit the campus March 12-14, 2003. The team will use the institution's presentation and supporting evidence along with the on-site review to demonstrate the institution's ability to sustain an evidence-based inquiry into the topic of educational effectiveness that leads to institutional improvement.
