UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR September 4, 2002 TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE CAMPUS COMMMUNITY RE: September 11 Anniversary Events Next Wednesday marks the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, as well as the crash of Flight 93 in a wooded field in rural Pennsylvania. Although those terrible events have certainly not been forgotten by any of us, their first anniversary is a fitting time for special reflection regarding the way in which they have affected us personally and as a nation. As part of that process of reflection, I invite you to share a moment of silence following the ringing of the campus chimes at noon on September 11 as we remember those who were lost or injured, the families left behind, and the heroic actions of many. The chimes are located atop the Memorial Union. They will ring at 12:00 noon, to be followed immediately by the lowering of the flag by an honor guard of campus firefighters and police and a moment of silence. The chimes will then sound "America the Beautiful." Although I encourage you to participate in the moment of silence from any location on campus, if you would like to join with others at the Memorial Union, please plan to convene a few minutes before 12:00 noon by the patio in front of Memorial Union that faces the quad. Honor guards will simultaneously lower the flags at the campus fire station and in front of Mrak Hall. Additional events planned include a brief program and moment of silence at the UC Davis Medical Center at 12:00 noon in the courtyard of the Patient Services Support Building. Further information about that program may be obtained by calling (916) 734-2401. In addition, the City of Davis plans a program at the Farmer's Market in Central Park that will include music beginning at 4:30 p.m., a moment of silence to be observed at 6:59 p.m., and a candlelight vigil at 8:00 p.m. All events on the Davis campus, at UCDMC, and in the City of Davis are open to the public. Anniversaries are often powerful reminders of the original events and can evoke the same powerful emotions. The following UC Davis resources are available to provide assistance to faculty, staff, and students who wish to seek it: Student Counseling Center in North Hall, 752-0871, and the Academic and Staff Assistance Program, 112 A Street, 752-2727 (campus), and 2730 Stockton Boulevard, Suite 3117, 916-734-2727 (UCDMC). Release time is appropriate with supervisory approval. Larry N. Vanderhoef Chancellor 02-111
