RE: Animal Bite First Aid Procedures and Training Materials

Employee Health Services has developed a set of materials to standardize information
provided to faculty, staff, and students in both research and clinical settings regarding
the proper procedures to be followed by individuals who are bitten by animals. These
materials have been reviewed and approved by the Campus Veterinarian, Environmental
Health and Safety, and Cowell Student Health Center. The materials include:

- A NOTICE to be posted in all locations where animals are handled You need Adobe Acrobat to view this document
- A Fact Sheet on Medical Care of Animal Bites You need Adobe Acrobat to view this document
- A training document for "First Aid Procedures and Medical Care for Animal Bites" You need Adobe Acrobat to view this document
- A post-test for First Aid Procedures and Medical Care for Animal Bites You need Adobe Acrobat to view this document
- Recommendations for posting and using these materials You need Adobe Acrobat to view this document

I encourage you to distribute and post these materials widely and to insure that all
animal handlers review the training materials. Animal bites are a leading cause of
workplace injuries on this campus, and employee safety and injury prevention is our
primary objective in developing this information. In addition, the campus will be
undergoing an accreditation site visit by AAALAC this fall, and prior site visits have
included random questioning of employees by the site visitors regarding their knowledge
of first aid procedures for animal bites and the location of treatment facilities.

Employee Health Services personnel are available to assist you in interpreting this
information, and in providing additional training as needed. Please contact Michael
O'Malley, M.D., MPH, or Janet Ford, MS, PT, at 752-2330 for additional information.
