UC DAVIS: Chancellor's Office

July 17, 2002

Deans, Directors, Department Chairs

RE: Graduate Studies

I am pleased to announce that Dean Cristina González has accepted my
invitation to serve as Senior Advisor to the Chancellor, effective August
1, 2002, to assist me during a period of rapid growth with a variety of
projects that do not fall naturally within the purview of any specific
area, but that require the focused attention of a senior administrator. To
enable her to assume this role she will be leaving her current position as
Dean-Graduate Studies. I am grateful for her willingness to help UC Davis
meet these needs; her help will be invaluable to us during this critical
period.

During Dr. González's tenure as Dean of Graduate Studies, the campus
achieved a new level of excellence in graduate education. She has also
served with distinction as Chair of the UC Council of Graduate Deans and as
a member of various national committees, including the Association of
Graduate Schools Executive Committee, the Council of Graduate Schools
Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and the Council of Graduate
Schools Advisory Committee on Minorities in Graduate Education, which she
currently chairs. In addition, Dr. González has authored numerous articles
on higher education topics that have been widely read and cited.

Academic Senate Chair Jeffery Gibeling, former Executive Associate Dean in
Graduate Studies, has agreed to assume the position of Dean-Graduate
Studies beginning August 1, 2002 for a two-year period. He will, between
now and then, be working closely with Graduate Studies staff to ensure a
smooth transition. His successor as Chair of the Davis Division of the
Academic Senate will be selected by the Committee on Committees in keeping
with the Bylaws of the Academic Senate.

Dr. Gibeling has served as a member of the Graduate Council for five years,
beginning in 1991, including a year and a quarter as its Chair. He served
as Executive Associate Dean in Graduate Studies from January 1996 through
June 1998.

I look forward to working with both Dr. González and Dr. Gibeling in their
new capacities.

Larry Vanderhoef
Chancellor
