September 28, 2001 PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS Dear Members of the Campus Community, We extend a warm welcome to all who join our campus for the first time this fall, as well as to those who are returning after a summer away. Clearly, we have all been shaken and sobered by the tragic events of September 11. Surely in the times ahead, we will differ in our convictions about the best course of action for the nation. We must not let the national events turn us upon one another because we differ in ethnicity, religion, or political conviction. We have declared ourselves a community committed to shared values of respect and responsibility. We encourage you to read or re-read the UC Davis Principles of Community (http://principles.ucdavis.edu/), first drafted over a decade ago. In the uncertain times we face during the events' aftermath, we at UC Davis can proceed with unshaken certainty and confidence that the guiding principle in our campus's Principles of Community "... that we affirm our commitment to the highest standards of decency and civility towards all ..." will govern our conduct and behavior. Even though this is an easier affirmation to preserve in untroubled times, the test of our individual and collective humanity emerges in times of conflict and crisis. We will accept no compromise of this standard of respect for one another. Whether directly affected or simply sharing the shock and grief, we know that this is a time when we must be able to call upon one another and upon the support services available on the campus (see http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/attacks). We note here, particularly, the services offered to students through our Counseling Center and to faculty and staff through our Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP). While we would certainly hope that none in our campus community would feel at personal risk, our Campus Violence Prevention Program provides 24-hour advocacy and intervention in hate- or bias-related incidents. And while we have no reason to believe that our campus is in any danger, our Police and Fire Departments remain on alert. We are a community and we will support one another. The entire campus community looks forward and, indeed, more than ever needs the sense of renewal and enthusiasm that characterizes the beginning of a new academic year. We will remain an intellectually vibrant community of students, staff, and scholars committed to one another and to the importance of the role that universities and the free exchange of ideas play in our country.
