UC DAVIS: ACCOUNTING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES December 12, 2001 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS, AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: University Mileage Reimbursement Rate Increase The IRS has announced that it is increasing the standard mileage rate for use of a private automobile from 34.5 cents per mile to 36.5 cents per mile. The increase in the mileage rate is based on annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile conducted on behalf of the IRS by an independent contractor. The change is effective for transportation expenses incurred by employees on or after January 1, 2002. It has been the University's policy to follow the IRS standard mileage rate so that mileage reimbursements to employees who travel on University business will not result in additional taxable income for those employees. Accordingly, the UC reimbursement rate is set at 36.5 cents per mile effective January 1, 2002. Sincerely, J. Michael Allred Associate Vice Chancellor--Accounting and Financial Services 01-182
