UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING October 29, 2001 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Draft Tiered Initial Study for the UC Davis West Campus Water Tower Replacement Project UC Davis proposes to remove existing Domestic Water Tower Number 2 located west of Highway 113 and to construct a new ground-level water tank to expand the current domestic water supply and fire flow capacity on campus lands west of Highway 113. The existing 100,000-gallon water tower is located south of Brooks Road on the west campus at UC Davis. The water tower is approximately 150 feet tall with an exterior lead-based paint coating system that is badly corroding. Replacing the water tower with a new 300,000-gallon ground tank would be more cost-effective than recoating the existing water tower and also would improve the domestic water system on the west campus. The tower demolition would be performed by cutting two of the four legs and pulling the tower over in a southerly direction to an agricultural field. A lead consultant would be contracted by the University to collect soil samples before and after demolition of the water tower. The contractor would conduct any required lead remediation of soils affected by the tower demolition. The new water tank would be located at the UC Davis Airport, on the east side of Hopkins Road south of Antique Mechanics and adjacent to the former fire station. It would be installed at ground level rather than mounted on a tower. The new tank would be 24 feet tall and 48 feet in diameter. A security fence would enclose the proposed tank and the pumps, controls, and standby generator that are required to serve the new tank. I am writing to inform you that a Draft Tiered Initial Study has been prepared for the proposed construction and operation of the project.
