UC DAVIS: Vice Provost-Undergraduate Studies October 30, 2001 Deans, Directors, Department Chairpersons RE: Call for proposals for Short-Term Programs Abroad Academic Year 2002-2003 Proposals are now being accepted from faculty for Directorships for Short-Term Programs Abroad (STPA). STPA started in 1999-2000 as a response to Chancellor Vanderhoef's call to increase the number of UC Davis undergraduate students participating in language and culture learning opportunities abroad. The goal of STPA is to develop programs in a variety of languages and cultures that will provide students with the opportunity to fulfill the language requirement (3 courses) in one quarter abroad and to learn more about other cultures and society of the host country. A UC Davis faculty member directs an individual program and teaches one course. The other courses are taught by faculty from the host institution abroad. While abroad, students are registered in Academic Senate approved UCD courses. The program director's department receives all student credit hours (FTE). Each program director also receives departmental teaching credit and regular salary during the program abroad. In addition, a travel and housing stipend of $8,000 is provided during the program, and start-up funds to help the faculty director visit the country to organize the STPA program. Program proposals are open to all UC Davis teaching faculty. We are now accepting applications for 2002-2003. Further information is available from Professor Cecilia Colombi Chair, STPA Committee, Spanish Department (752-1244 or cmcolombi@ucdavis.edu), or Cathie Carson, Program Coordinator (754-6669 or shorttermabroad@ucdavis.edu).
