UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR October 22, 2001 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDHS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: UC Davis and the 2001 United Way Campaign Your first inclination may be to set this note aside. Solicitations, no matter how worthy the cause, are not the most welcome pieces of mail. This one, though, is a bit different. In addition to presenting to you the broad-based flexibility of United Way, you will see that you can present your gift directly to more than 20 programs at our UC Davis Health System, including the M.I.N.D. Institute, the UC Davis Children's Hospital, and AIDS & Related Disorders Clinic. Whatever your thoughts about personal charitable contributions, please consider how important every gift - no matter the size - can be to your friends and neighbors and thousands of others who will benefit. United Way focuses on building strong families, helping youth succeed, and maximizing senior life. Your contribution, for example, makes the following possibilities: * $5 per pay period provides one week of temporary shelter and food for a battered woman and three children. * $10 per pay period provides clothing for an entire family of five after a fire has destroyed their home. * $20 per pay period provides a terminally ill patient and their family with complete in-home care for a year. If you choose to contribute to United Way during this year's "Compassion in Action" campaign, November 1 - November 16, you can address our community's most critical needs. And when you invest in United Way Sacramento Area, about 86.5 cents of every dollar goes directly to community agencies - many of whom could not afford to raise funds without United Way's assistance. This year's campaign chairs, Director of Community Relations Mabel Salon and UCDHS Manager of Community Relations Barbara Ross, would be happy to arrange a 10-minute presentation to help inform you and your staff about United Way at an upcoming unit meeting. To schedule a presentation on campus, contact Mabel at 530-752-9795 or masalon@ucdavis.edu. To schedule a presentation at UCDMC, contact Barbara at 916-734-5441 or barbara.ross@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu. Individually addressed pledge forms will be sent to employees this week and will be due November 16. Requests for additional blank forms or questions about the campaign operations can be directed to Nannette Pedroso, Government and Community Relations, 530-752-9795 or npedroso@ucdavis.edu for campus employees and Lissa deVega at 916-734-2282 or felisa.devega@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu for Health System employees. With appreciation, Larry N. Vanderhoef Chancellor 01-154
