RE: Safety Awareness

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

As incidents involving anthrax have unfolded in Florida, New York, and
Reno, Nevada, the UC Davis Police Department recognizes the campus
community has a heightened sense of concern. We continue to work with the
UC Davis Fire Department, Environmental Health & Safety, local, state, and
federal agencies to assimilate the most up-to-date information and to
ensure a coordinated response to any and all incidents. At this time we
have received no information that the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001,
or the most recent anthrax incidents in other states have threatened our
campus. Following are action steps we are currently taking to ensure the
safety of our campus communities:

1. We are working closely with the UC Davis Mail Division. Mail Division
staff has been trained to handle and report suspicious letters and
packages. The web sites noticed below reflect a joint advisory from the
Police Department and the Mail Division on handling mail and suspicious
packages.

2. In coordination with UC Davis Fire and Environmental Health & Safety,
the Police Department is prepared to respond to any hazardous materials
incidents that may occur in our community. The Fire Department is trained
and has the equipment and capabilities to mitigate any hazardous material
incidents in the region.

3. We remain prepared to initiate a level 1 Emergency Operations Center as
needed.

4. The Police Department remains on full alert status. In addition to
deploying police officers for high visibility, officers continue to patrol
buildings on campus and at the medical center. We urge everyone on campus
to report any suspicious person or activities to the Police Department at
752-1727 and TDD. Those at the Medical Center can reach the Police
Department at 734-2555. In case of an EMERGENCY, always call 9-1-1.
