UC DAVIS: TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING SERVICES ****PLEASE POST AND CIRCULATE**** September 19, 2001 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS AND CAMPUS /UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Parking Lot 28 Closure To accommodate the construction schedule of the new Sciences Teaching Laboratory Building, demolition of the area surrounding Lot 28 (Haring Hall) is planned to begin as early as October 15, 2001. The planned loss of Parking Lot 28 (97 Spaces) on October 15 will be accommodated with stack parking. Beginning September 26, 2001, stack parking, a program which uses parking attendants to take advantage of aisle space within parking facilities to double park vehicles without disrupting traffic circulation, will be provided in Lot 41 (south of the Life Sciences Addition) and in Temporary Lot 45 (south of the Police and Fire Building). Stack parking services have been successfully operated on the campus for the past 5 years and will continue to be offered in the North Entry Parking Structure (Hickey Gym), Lot 10 (First and A Streets), and Lot 15 (California Avenue) in addition to Lots 41 and 45. On the reverse side of this memorandum is a questions and answers sheet about attendant assisted (stack) parking that may assist you in better understanding this parking program. During construction of the Sciences Teaching Laboratory Building, vehicular access to the west side of Haring Hall will be limited to service vehicles only. Access to the Gross Anatomy loading dock on the north side of the west wing of Haring Hall will be from California Avenue. Access from Hutchison Drive will be discontinued. Individuals who have Teaching Hospital (TH) parking privileges and use Parking Lot 28 will have alternative parking spaces designated in Lot 29 (Haring Hall) to compensate for the loss of "TH" spaces in Lot 28. Questions regarding the construction of this important campus building may be directed to Health and Safety Officer, Veterinary Medicine Dean's Office, Dan Mitchell (752-8373) or Architects and Engineers Project Manager Allen Lowery (752-1956). Contreras Director Transportation and Parking Services 01-131 Questions and Answers About Attendant-Assisted (Stack) Parking Question: Is attendant-assisted parking valet parking? Answer: Attendant-assisted parking (also known as stack parking) isn't valet parking. Wherever possible attendants will help employees locate parking spaces where they can self-park or "Park and Lock." When these spaces are filled, parking attendants will then ask you to park your vehicle in an aisle, lock your car, and leave your keys (car keys only) with the attendant. The attendant will give you a parking "claim check" to redeem your car and keys later. When you are ready to leave, an attendant will move other vehicles as necessary allowing you to safely exit. Question: Who is in charge of attendant-assisted parking? Answer: Parking Services contracts with a parking contractor, AMPCO System Parking, which provides similar parking services for UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz and UC Los Angeles. Question: What hours will attendant-assisted parking be provided? Answer: Attendants will be in identified parking lots from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., weekdays, with hours adjusted as necessary to accommodate demand. Question: If I am asked to turn over my keys to a parking attendant, how do I know my car and its contents will be safe? Answer: Those customers using attendant-assisted parking who are asked to give up their keys will first lock their cars, and then provide the car keys to the attendant in exchange for a numbered claim check. All car keys collected by attendants will be kept in a locked key box at the attendant kiosk. At least one attendant will be in the lot all day and your car will only be released to the individual holding the appropriate claim check. Question: I work the day shift but often do not get off until after 6:00 p.m. If I have left my car in the lot and keys with the attendant, what happens to my car and keys after 6:00 p.m.? Answer: At closing, the attendant will ensure your car is locked and will turn over your keys in a sealed envelope to Parking Services. You may exchange your claim check for your keys at the Howard Way entrance attendant booth in the North Entry Parking Structure after 6:00 p.m. Whenever possible, you may wish to get your keys from the attendant prior to 6:00 p.m. Question: My car and its contents are irreplaceable. In other words, no one touches my car but me. Answer: In that case, an alternative is to arrive on the campus early enough to obtain one of the available self-park spaces in the lot, or park in a lot that is not scheduled for attendant-assisted parking. Uncontrolled self-parking will not be allowed in the lots identified for stack parking at any time. To accommodate all who need to park on campus, strict enforcement of parking guidelines will be necessary. Question: What happens if I use attendant-assisted parking and my car is damaged? Answer: Our parking contractor, who has extensive liability insurance, has an excellent reputation for handling cars carefully. If you believe your car was damaged in the lot, report the damage immediately to the parking attendant supervisor who will assist you in filing a claim. Question: If my carpool has a space reserved in an attendant-assisted lot, will we be allowed to park in that space? Answer: Yes. If you are a member of a registered carpool, you can park in the preferential parking area assigned to your carpool just as you do now. If more than one member of your carpool drives a car to work, only one vehicle from your carpool will be allowed in the preferential parking spaces per day. Question: I have a car cover. If my car is unlocked in attendant-assisted parking, can I cover my car? Answer: Unfortunately, no. AMPCO System Parking employees need to move your car on demand, and a car cover would slow this process.
