UC DAVIS: Facilities Services Department: Fire Division July 27, 2001 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS ADMISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Fire Hydrant Group Flow Testing Every year the Fire Division conducts individual and group flow tests of the approximately 220 fire hydrants on campus to confirm pressure and volume. These tests are conducted on an annual basis in August. Additionally, in the interest of water conservation and landscape maintenance, firefighters will take special precautions to ensure water flow and landscape disruption is kept to the absolute minimum. The group flow test of hydrants in key campus locations is conducted to evaluate the ability of the water system to provide large volumes of water during a major fire. These tests are conducted to simulate a maximum demand situation. Group flows will take place between 1:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. on the test dates indicated below. However, should events occur which prevent us from conducting the test as scheduled, the tests will be conducted on the alternate test dates indicated. Test Dates: August 4 August 6 August 14 Alternate Test Dates: August 8 August 11 August 21 Your department may experience some discharge of discolored water due to the widespread agitation of sediment in the water mains during the flow tests. We regret this inconvenience but hope you will agree it is in the best interest of the campus to confirm our readiness for a major fire. Please direct any questions regarding these tests to the University Fire Division at 752-1236. Weston Arvin Assistant Fire Chief - Fire Marshal 01-105
