UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING December 28, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Draft Environmental Impact Report for The Jackson Laboratory, JAX West, at UC Davis UC Davis proposes the construction and operation of a new facility, JAX West, for the breeding and maintenance of genetically standardized mice. The new facility would be on a site leased to The Jackson Laboratory, a non-profit entity specializing in breeding, research, and maintenance of genetically standardized strains of mice. The proposed facility would provide research specimens to UC Davis and to researchers throughout the western United States. The Jackson Laboratory is internationally recognized as the primary repository and supplier of inbred and genetically modified mice to the biomedical research community. These research specimens are essential to the study of human genetic diseases. The facility would consist of a 96,000 square foot building and would include space for breeding and housing mice, lab space, office and administrative space, and employee facilities. The new facility would encompass approximately six acres and is proposed for a currently undeveloped location near the UC Davis airport, west of Hopkins Road on the UC Davis campus. I am writing to inform you that a Draft Focused Tiered Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been prepared for the proposed construction and operation of this facility. You are invited to submit written comments on this Draft EIR to the Office of Resource Management and Planning through February 12, 2001. In addition, a public hearing to receive testimony as part of the formal record on the Draft EIR will be held on January 29, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the University Club on Old Davis Road.
