UC DAVIS: RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING November 21, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Conference Center & Hotel and University Relations Building - Revised Initial Study The University is evaluating the potential environmental effects of a project to permit the construction and operation of a conference center and hotel and a University Relations Building. The five-acre conference center and hotel would be on the central campus located south of the University Club and Environmental Horticulture Department, southeast of the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center, east of the Center for the Arts Performance Hall and parking structure, and north of the Union Pacific rail line. The conference center and hotel would include construction of approximately 150 guest rooms, 13,200 assignable square feet of conference and meeting space, one restaurant and pub, and associated support spaces. Approximately 125 new parking spaces would be provided on-site. The University Relations Building would be on a one-acre site located on the south side of and immediately adjacent to the proposed conference center and hotel on the east side of the South Entry Quad. This approximately 40,000 assignable square foot building would be primarily offices, meeting rooms, and associated support spaces. An Initial Study that recommended preparation of a Negative Declaration for this project was published in mid-September 2000. In response to questions raised during review of that document, the campus has published a Revised Draft Tiered Initial Study. This revised document recommends preparation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the project. This Revised Draft Tiered Initial Study outlines the topics that will be analyzed in the EIR that will be prepared. You are invited to comment on the Revised Draft Tiered Initial Study through December 18, 2000. In addition, a public scoping meeting will be held on December 4, 2000, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the University Club on Old Davis Road. Copies of the Revised Draft Tiered Initial Study and the 1994 UC Davis LRDP EIR are on file at the following locations: the Reserve Reading Room at Shields Library on the UC Davis campus; the Yolo County Library, 315 East 14th Street, Davis, California; and the Fairfield-Suisun Community Library, 1150 Kentucky Street, Fairfield, California. If you questions about the environmental review for this project, please contact UC Davis Environmental Planner Sid England at (530)752-2432. Sincerely, John A. Meyer Vice Chancellor-Resource Management and Planning 00-151
