UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST DEANS, DIRECTORS, AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE RE: Faculty Development Program Awards I am pleased to announce that the Faculty Development Program initiated in 1978 will again provide awards beginning in Summer 2001 and continuing through the 2001-2002 academic year. I am also pleased to tell you that we have been able to maintain last year's level in both the number and the amount of the awards. The purpose of these awards is to encourage the scholarly attainment by faculty members whose heavy involvement in University and community service has significantly impeded or has the potential to impede their progress in research or other creative activity. One form of service overload is experienced by many under-represented faculty members who are sought out for extensive committee service and/or advising. Another form of service overload may result from service on committees that require unusually heavy commitments of time. This year the application instructions and cover sheet will be posted on the Vice Provost-Academic Personnel web site at: http://academicpersonnel.ucdavis.edu/ on October 31, 2000. While all faculty are eligible for awards, priority is given to assistant professors with worthy proposals and demonstrable need. The Program involves several kinds of awards. Recipients of the Quarter-Long Awards will be relieved of teaching and service responsibilities for a period of one academic quarter (Fall 2001 or Winter or Spring 2002). Recipients of the Summer Awards (nine-month appointees only) will receive one month of supplemental salary for Summer 2001. Recipients will also receive $1,000 for supplies and expenses associated with their research. The eligibility criteria, conditions of the awards, and application procedures are fully described in the attached announcement. Please note that applications and supporting materials for all awards must be received by the dean of your college/school/division by December 4, 2000. Deans' offices should transmit the applications and supporting material to the Office of the Provost by January 8, 2001. Questions concerning the Faculty Development Program should be directed to Sarah Gray, Assistant Vice Provost (752-9984 or sdgray@ucdavis.edu). Barry M.
