UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING October 27, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Planning Process and Development of the UC Davis Long Range Development Plan Members of the campus community are invited to attend the first meeting of the Chancellor's Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) Advisory Committee on Tuesday, October 31, from 4 pm to 6 pm, in the University Club Lounge. This is the beginning of a multi-year planning process to develop the campus Long Range Development Plan. As you know, the University of California expects to enroll an additional 60,000 students between now and 2010-11. As our fair share, UC Davis has been asked to plan to increase our enrollment to 30-31,000 students (compared to the current enrollment of about 25,000) over the next ten years. This enrollment increase and other factors are expected to generate a significant increase in campus employees over the same period. The LRDP is a key element of our consideration of this enrollment increase. The plan will respond to the academic priorities of the campus and identify the required land and facilities to support growth in the three areas of our mission: instruction, research, and public service. We will also use this LRDP to ask representatives from the surrounding government jurisdictions, community opinion leaders, and representatives from the campus community: * What kind of community do we want to be? * How can we provide housing for more members of our campus community with minimal impact on regional air quality and transportation systems? * More generally, how can we simultaneously grow as an educational institution and contribute to the quality of life for both the campus and our adjacent communities? Over the course of the planning process, we will be asking the campus and community members to review and provide feedback on (1) the vision and goals for the future of the campus, (2) program and land use alternatives designed to meet the vision and goals, (3) evaluation of the land use alternatives, (4) identification of a preferred alternative, and (5) external considerations and impacts that should be taken into account in the development of the LRDP and associated planning and environmental review products. It will be our intent that the UC Davis envisioned in this plan will grow in stature and quality as an asset to our regional community. We encourage and look forward to all members of the campus community participating in the planning process. Sincerely, John A. Meyer Vice Chancellor - Resource Management and Planning 00-140
