UC DAVIS: FACILITIES SERVICES DEPARTMENT and ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY December 1, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: Annual Asbestos Notification California Health and Safety Code Section 25915 requires that all UC Davis employees be notified annually of the presence of asbestos in campus buildings constructed prior to 1979. Please post this notice in an area accessible to all employees. A statement will appear on the December payroll stubs referring employees to this notification. Building occupants should be aware that asbestos might be found in the following materials: Acoustical Panels Asphalt Floor Tiles Ceiling Tiles Chalkboards Fire Proofing Fume Hood Insulation Glazing Compound Gypsum Board Joint Compound Laboratory Bench Tops Linoleum Oven Gaskets Plaster Stucco Textured Paints Transite Panels Transite Shingles Vinyl Asbestos Tiles Vinyl Asbestos Tile Mastic It is important to note that the presence of asbestos does not mean you have been exposed. Exposure results when friable asbestos particles are inhaled or ingested. Asbestos becomes friable when material containing asbestos is drilled, sanded or disturbed by remodeling or demolition work. Intact, bonded, sealed or undisturbed asbestos does not pose a hazard. Please refer to SafetyNet #84 at http://ehs.ucdavis.edu/ for additional information. A list of buildings constructed before 1979 can be found at http://www-pplant.ucdavis.edu/docs/fdx-ad.htm. Julie McNeal Director Environmental Health & Safety Louie J.
