UC DAVIS: ACADEMIC SENATE
October 13, 2000
MEMORANDUM
TO: Deans, Directors and Department Chairpersons
FROM: Margaret Johns, Chair
Academic Senate Committee on Public Service
RE: 2000-01 Distinguished Public Service Award
Attached is the Call for the 2000-01 Distinguished Public Service Award.
I would very much appreciate it if you would PLEASE POST the colored flier
that you'll be receiving in the next few days in a visible location in your
department and seek out worthy candidates to nominate. This Award will be
presented by the Davis Division of the Academic Senate to up to 4 deserving
faculty members who have made significant contributions to the world, nation,
state and community through distinguished public service. In addition to
the extraordinarily long term of service, the committee is very interested
in reviewing what a newer faculty member may have done in a relatively short
period of time. The recipient(s) will receive a stipend.
I have included a copy of the official Call for Nominations with this memo,
which has been mailed to each faculty member under separate cover. The Call
for Nominations is also available on the Academic Senate web page:
http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/senate/
and on the Directives page at:
http://directives.ucdavis.edu
Please note that the deadline for receipt of nominations is Monday, November 27,
2000. If you have questions or need additional information, please feel free
to call Kathy von Rummelhoff at 752-3920.
We expect to assemble a strong group of candidates from our public service-minded
faculty, but your help is earnestly solicited. Thank you for your assistance.

UC DAVIS: ACADEMIC SENATE
October 13, 2000
2000-2001 DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Davis Division of the Academic Senate invites nominations of candidates
for the 2000-2001 Award for Distinguished Public Service. Up to four (4)
awards will be made annually. All tenured members of the Academic Senate
(including Professors-in-Residence and Professors of Clinical (Specialty) at
the level of Associate Professor or higher, and Lecturers with Security of
Employment), provided they have not previously won the award, are eligible
for nomination by other members of the Academic Senate.
Description: The Award, which includes a stipend, is presented by the Davis
Division of the Academic Senate in recognition of significant contributions to
the world, nation, state and community through distinguished public service.
The Distinguished Public Service Award is based on our confidence in the
University's tradition of excellence and demonstrates the commitment of the
Davis campus to public service.
Definition: Public service is organized activity that extends a faculty
member's expertise in teaching, research or professional competence beyond
the university campus into local, statewide, national, or international
public arenas. For purposes of this Award, distinguished public service is
the unpaid, focused and sustained direct extension of a faculty member's
disciplinary or technical expertise to the public and non-profit sector.
Service resulting in significant monetary gain (private consulting) is not
considered public service, nor is service performed as a private citizen
(membership in local service clubs) or as an elected public official
(city council). As criteria for this award, public service can include
these activities:
1. Testifying before international, federal, state or local legislative,
executive or judicial hearings, meetings, boards or commissions.
2. Consultations, advice and recommendations to government boards,
commissions or agencies.
3. Membership on boards, commissions or special committees of international,
federal, state or local bodies.
4. Research for or collaboration with public agencies, commissions, boards,
task forces or committees.
5. Service to community groups, nonprofit organizations and the general
public in meetings, workshops, and conferences, including presentations to
these, or through the media.
6. Development and dissemination of information of state, national and/or
international importance through the production of non-profit documentary
videos or film.
The departmental MSO/Administrative Assistant or Chairperson can usually
supply information related to a candidate's public service record.
Nominations: Nominations should be in the form of a letter (not to exceed
two single-spaced, typewritten pages) providing a comprehensive summary of
the qualities and accomplishments that would warrant the candidate to be
considered for the Award. The letter should focus on the scope and impact
of the public service efforts and should detail the special characteristics
that extend the nominee's expertise and sets him/her apart from other faculty
such as their philosophy, objectives, or impact of effort. If service did
result in gain, please describe. The committee considers nominations with
long term as well as short-term distinguished public service. The nominator
should insure that documentary evidence is available; however, supporting
material should not be attached to this nomination.
Finalists: The Academic Senate Committee on Public Service will review
the nominations and select final candidates for further consideration.
A more complete dossier for each finalist will be requested from the
nominator for review by the Committee.
Deadline: All letters must be received before 5:00 p.m. on Monday,
November 27, 2000. Nominations should be addressed to The Committee on
Public Service, Academic Senate Office, 356 Mrak Hall,
Attn: Kathy von Rummelhoff. Questions concerning nominations should be
addressed to Kathy von Rummelhoff at 752-3920.
