DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARMENT CHAIRS:
RE: Addendum to Protocols on Faculty Recruitments Associated with
Campus Planning Initiatives (Update to Directive 00-076)
This addendum to the protocols is based on experience gained so far with
initiative-based recruiting. It has become clear that some clarifying
information involving what was referred to as "stage 1" procedures is
necessary to ensure that there is clear, up-front support from the key
department(s), or program(s) or Section(s) (hereafter referred to as
"units") in an initiative recruitment. In essence, without clear up-front
unit buy-in early in the recruitment process, it is unlikely that a
successful initiative-based recruitment will occur. Furthermore,
experience has shown that an open recruitment (any faculty rank at
appointment), especially for a single position, can cause significant
difficulties and is therefore not recommended.
To execute a smooth and successful recruitment it is essential to focus the
recruitment on one, or at most two, identified primary recruiting unit(s)
and a specified recruiting level (Assistant, Assistant/Associate, or Full).
The primary units must be involved from the outset and play the lead role
in managing the details of the recruitment. The Position Search Committee
should have at least two members from the initiative's Faculty Steering
Committee, with the remainder (4+) from the involved primary units. The
faculty in the involved units should participate in the recruitment process
in the same manner as in a normal core recruitment.
Open searches present substantial special problems in that the applicants
naturally split into two groups of junior and senior candidates that are
very difficult to compare. The net result is that there often is a request
to make multiple hires, one junior and one senior, and because of limited
FTE dual senior/junior hires are seldom feasible, unless they were
authorized at the outset. It is therefore recommended that different
searches, targeted specifically for junior (Assistant/Associate) or senior
(Professor) hires, be run separately.
