MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY
RE: 2001 Freshman Seminar Program: Call for Proposals

Members of the Faculty:

I am writing to invite faculty participation in the Freshman Seminar Program for the
2001 winter quarter and the 2001 spring quarter. As the result of generous support
from the Office of the President, we are able to increase the award from $500 to
$1500. Additionally, instructors are eligible to apply for up to $500 in Minigrant
support to defray expenses that may be associated with conducting the class.

As many of you know, the program is designed to give first-year students the
opportunity to study with a faculty member in more informal, small group settings
on topics of mutual interest. Freshman Seminars are administered by the
Teaching Resources Center; they are Senate-approved special two-unit courses
that are given a FRS catalog designation. They typically meet for a total of 20
hours during the first eight weeks of the quarter and they are letter-graded.
Enrollment is limited to fifteen students per class.

From the program's inception, faculty members have offered Freshman Seminars
as an add-on to their normal departmental teaching assignments. All proposals are
reviewed by a faculty program committee.

I hope you will consider participating in this unique opportunity to work with our
first-year students. If you are interested in offering an FRS 1 Seminar, please
complete the "Proposal to Teach a Freshman Seminar" material found on the
TRC web site (http://trc.ucdavis.edu/trc/frosh/FRSapp.html) and return it to Barbara
Sommer at the Teaching Resources Center by October 25, 2000. If you have any
questions about the program, please contact Dr. Sommer at the TRC (2-6050;
basommer@ucdavis.edu).
