UC DAVIS: PLANNING AND BUDGET OFFICE June 29, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, and CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS RE: UCDNet2 Draft Tiered Initial Study The University is evaluating the potential environmental effects of the proposed construction and operation of the UCDNet2 Project. The project would extend the existing campus fiber optic infrastructure into areas of the campus which currently do not have access to existing services or where the level of service is inadequate for anticipated growth. These areas include; (1) the Research Park complex, (2) buildings and facilities in the West Campus, (3) buildings and facilities in the South Campus, and (4) a few facilities in the Central Campus. The project would include the construction of two 300-square foot equipment buildings. One structure would be on the West Campus approximately 20 feet north of the Pomology Headquarters on the east side of Hopkins Road. The second structure would be on the South Campus located approximately 1/4 mile south of Interstate 80 and approximately 50 feet West Side of Old Davis Road. The UCDNet2 project also includes underground installation of approximately 12 miles of new fiber optic cable conduit in the Central, West, and South Campuses through a combination of trenching and horizontal boring to place new conduits. At other locations, existing conduits will be used. The project also includes the installation of fiber optic cables within existing buildings including the construction or remodeling of telecommunications closets, as required, and the installation of network electronics. I am writing to inform you that a Draft Tiered Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration has been prepared for the UCDNet2 Project and that you are invited to comment on the Draft Initial Study during the 30-day public review period from June 29 through July 28, 2000.
