UC DAVIS: Vice Chancellor--Administration May 22, 2000 DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS Re: Risk Management Program Changes As astute managers know, enterprise risk management involves more than the protection of campus human resources. Whether a structure or its contents, loss of property can result in crippling and catastrophic loss to the campus mission of teaching and research. In fact, one of the largest preventable losses at this campus involves "mysterious disappearance" of property. Usually, this occurs because a department has not fine-tuned its inventory processes. Other common types of property losses involve UC vehicles. The most frequent and expensive claims are those involving a University driver backing up or driving directly into stationary objects. These losses are preventable! With the following changes to the University's property damage programs, I urge you to contact Bonnie Robbins, Risk Manager: Property & Liability, for guidance in reducing or preventing property losses. Deductible Increases and Changes to Self-Insured Property Damage Coverage Office of the President Risk Management has notified campus Enterprise Risk Management of several changes to the self-insured property programs. Unless otherwise stated, these changes become effective 7/1/00. BUS-28 - Property Damage (contents and structures) * Deductibles on most types of perils covered by this program will be increased from $250 to $1,000 per occurrence. * Deductible for fire damage will be increased from $250 to $5,000 per occurrence. * "Buydown" insurance (which reduces the deductible for theft) remains intact. * The lockdown program, which provides a zero deductible for theft losses, will be discontinued since the most prevalent theft involves the removal of internal components, not the hardware. * Boiler & Machinery and Crime deductibles will no longer be funded under this program, and will be the responsibility of the location incurring the loss. * Boiler & Machinery deductible is $25,000, except the Cogeneration Plant, which is $50,000. * Crime deductible is $500,000 (eff. 7/1/99), an increase of $200,000. BUS-69 - Vehicle Physical Damage (UC-owned vehicles) * Deductible for vehicle physical damage will be increased from $200 to $500 per occurrence. Excess Commercial Policies In some cases, there will be increased premium charges or increased deductibles for commercially insured exposures (Aviation, Marine, Boiler and Machinery). Departments covered by this insurance will be notified individually of the premium charges and any applicable increases/decreases. Any questions may be directed to Bonnie Robbins, Risk Manager: Property & Liability, 2-9189, or bjrobbins@ucdavis.edu. Janet C. Hamilton Vice Chancellor-Administration 00-073
