Re: Discontinuation of Social Security Numbers as the Student/Staff/Faculty
ID Number
In response to growing community concerns regarding the confidentiality of
individual Social Security numbers (SSNs), UC Davis has embarked on a
project to implement University identification numbers that are not based
on SSNs. A campuswide steering committee has considered alternative
approaches to the implementation of a non-SSN University ID number for
students, staff, and faculty. A new system has been adopted and will be
phased in for students entering Fall, 2001. Expected implementation for
staff and faculty will be within the 2000-2001 fiscal year, depending upon
the most convenient time for conversion of the campus payroll and personnel
system.
It is important to note that the Social Security number will continue to be
a part of every individual's record, as indeed it must be for purposes of
payroll and student financial aid. We are making every effort to ensure
administrative functions that depend on the Social Security number will not
be adversely affected by the conversion and that the change will be
transparent to all administrative systems.
One of the goals of the steering committee is to ensure broad consultation
with all campus units that will be affected by this conversion. To date, we
have identified the units on the attached list as possibly having an
operational interest in the conversion to a non-SSN ID number. We are
asking any other campus constituencies that are not listed here and that
might be affected by the change in identification number to contact the
steering committee as soon as possible. Please direct all such
communication to Jack Farrell, University Registrar, 129 Mrak Hall, or via
e-mail at jfarrell@ucdavis.edu. When all interested constituencies have
been identified, a "town meeting" will be held to discuss issues, concerns,
and approaches to address them. As the planning process proceeds, the
steering committee will be in frequent communication with the entire campus
community. Thank you for your interest in this endeavor.
