Re:     Recruitment for Director, John Muir Institute of the Environment

The University of California, Davis, invites nominations and applications
for the position of Director, John Muir Institute of the Environment.  The 
John Muir Institute of the Environment is an Organized Research Unit and is
envisioned as a premier center for research and outreach on the biological,
physical and human environment.  The Institute will foster and disseminate
integrative, multi-disciplinary environmental research and will contribute
broadly to graduate education in environmental program areas.  Its central
mission will be to provide the scientific, humanistic and policy
advancements necessary for addressing the major environmental issues facing 
California, the nation and the world.  The Institute will fully coordinate the 
campus' expansive environmental portfolio, and will champion UC Davis as a 
world leader in the environmental sciences through innovative outreach efforts 
that harness the extraordinary diversity of environmental expertise at UC Davis.

The Director of the John Muir Institute of the Environment will provide
academic and administrative leadership to the environmental sciences at a
campus-wide level.  He/she will serve as integrator of research and outreach
programs at UC Davis that span the humanities, social sciences and policy,
biological and physical sciences and engineering, and the health sciences.
The Director will coordinate research centers in specific environmental areas
and the UC Davis Natural Reserve System, promote effective environmental
outreach programs, and work with federal, state, and regional agencies to 
develop a cross-disciplinary approach to environmental management.  The 
Director will also advise the Provost and the Deans on resource allocations for
campus-wide programs centered on the environment.

Qualifications:
We seek an outstanding and experienced individual, primarily from the
biological or physical sciences, who qualifies for a tenured appointment at
the Full Professor level.  A Ph.D. degree or the equivalent is required.  The
directorship will be an 11-month appointment for a five-year term
(renewable).  The director will also have an academic appointment in an 
appropriate academic unit at UC Davis.

education and outreach programs of the John Muir Institute of the Environment.

filled,  but to ensure consideration, nominations and applications should be
received by January 15, 2000.  This position is available July 1, 2000.
