RE:  Staff Education and Development

We offer many courses that can enhance the professional development of our
staff members. The Guide you've recently received (the Staff Development &
Professional Services 1999-2000 Program and Planning Guide) and the on-line
course catalog (http://sdps.ucdavis.edu/) will tell you and our staff all 
one needs to know about these courses.

Opportunity for professional development is, in my experience, extremely
important to our staff. It allows them to perform better in their current
jobs, and it gives them the tools and hope for advancement. Both effects are
morale builders.

Release time, alternative work schedules, even funding for the course fees,
are ways that you can promote and encourage staff goals and pursuits. I highly
recommend that you offer one or more of these aids. The payoff is considerable.
