UC DAVIS: OFFICE OF THE PROVOST

June 9, 1999

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, AND
CAMPUS/UCDMC ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS

RE: Appointment of Vice Provost-Undergraduate Studies

I am pleased to announce that Professor Patricia Turner has accepted my
invitation to serve as Vice Provost-Undergraduate Studies. Her appointment
will be effective October 1, 1999. As Vice Provost-Undergraduate Studies,
she will be responsible for campuswide leadership in sustaining and improving
the quality of undergraduate academic programs at UC Davis.

Professor Turner, currently Director of the Program in African American and
African Studies, is an accomplished scholar of national prominence, a superb
teacher, and an exceptionally effective campus citizen. UC Davis is fortunate
to have someone with her commitment, experience, and skills in this key
leadership position.

Chancellor Vanderhoef and I would like to thank Professor Peter Dale who has
served with distinction as the first Vice Provost-Undergraduate Studies for
the last six years. We are grateful to him for agreeing to continue to serve in
his current capacity until Professor Turner assumes the position.

Please join me in welcoming Professor Turner to her new role.

Sincerely,

Robert D. Grey
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
