UC DAVIS: ACADEMIC SENATE
COMMITTEE ON COURSES OF INSTRUCTION
Date: April 19, 1999
To: Deans, Directors, Department Chairs
From: G. J. Mattey, Chair
Committee on Courses of Instruction
RE: Recent Committee Actions
In recent months the Academic Senate Committee on Courses of Instruction has
taken some actions that may affect your unit. I am writing to update you
about three actions of particular importance.
Cancellation of Unoffered Courses
Last Fall Quarter we asked departments and programs that had on record courses
that had not been offered in the past three years to provide justification for
retaining those courses. All courses in your unit for which we received
justification for retention were not cancelled. With your help we have
eliminated 710 courses from the courses database. There may have been some
courses on your list that were already cancelled or were not even offered by
your unit. This was the result of errors in the database. The responses we
received pointing out these errors has allowed the Office of the Registrar to
clean up the database to a great extent. We are very appreciative of your
efforts in assisting us with the process of making the listing of courses more
reflective of the actual course offerings of the campus.
Cross-Listing and Grading Variances
During the Winter Quarter, the Courses Committee recently revised its policies
and procedures regarding cross-listing of courses and grading variances. The
existing policy on cross-listing was found not to conform to the Committee's
intentions and was altered accordingly. The key difference in the new
formulation is that in every case of cross-listing, there must be sharing of
resources among the units offering the course. The policy on grading variances
was altered to allow more options to instructors and students. Specifically,
instructors may now obtain variances in advance of offering their courses, and
students who wish to opt out of the variance may do so.
The attachments (via hard copy) that follow supercede the information on these
two items that appears in our September 30, 1998, "Policies and Procedures for
Submitting Course Approval Requests."
Attachment 1 [http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/senate/policy.htm#cross] replaces
section II. B. 3. in the September 30, 1998 document;
Attachment 2 [http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/senate/policy.htm#gradvar] replaces
Attachment 4 in the September 30, 1998 document.
