RE:    California Street Bridge

Dear Colleagues:

The California Street Bridge crossing the Arboretum near Old
Davis Road is currently rated for 36,000lb maximum vehicle weight.  We
believe that some commercial use of the California Street Bridge is
currently exceeding this weight limit, and we are exploring a retrofit
project to increase the rating to 50,000lbs.  However, for public safety at
the current time, it is important that all vehicles adhere to the current
weight limitations of 36,000lbs.  Until further notice vehicles exceeding
36,000lbs may use the Hutchison Drive entry into campus, but may not use the
California Street Bridge approaching from the south campus entry.  Please
advise vendors and visitors to your departments of this weight restriction.

We will keep you advised of our plans for retrofitting the
California Street Bridge and future increases in the maximum weight limit.
